Chiropractic Care for Neck Pain and Injuries

Your neck, also known as the cervical spine is made up of seven small vertebrae that begin at the base of your skull. The neck not only supports the full weight of your head but it is also tasked with moving the head in every direction, leaving vulnerable to pain and injury.

Some of the most common causes of neck pain include:

  • Age – As you grow older, the chances of developing a degenerative disorder such as osteoarthritis, degenerative disc disease or spinal stenosis greatly increase.
  • Poor Posture – In addition to obesity and weak abdominal muscles, poor posture can put a great deal of extra strain on the neck. This can lead to pain, stiffness and a decreased range of motion.
  • Accidents and Injuries – When the neck is exposed to a sudden forceful movement and rebounds in the opposite direction, you may experience whiplash. This sudden whipping motion causes injury to the surrounding muscles and tissues in the cervical spine, resulting in stiffness, pain and other symptoms.

Chiropractic Care for Neck Pain

During your initial comprehensive chiropractic exam, our chiropractor in Tracy will gather information on your health history, current symptoms and any previous treatment. Once a diagnosis has been made, we will then recommend a treatment plan that utilizes chiropractic adjustments to target the root cause of your pain. Additional treatment methods may also be recommended to supplement your regular spinal adjustments including massage therapy and corrective exercises.

At-Home Corrective Exercises

Corrective exercise can easily be used to help strengthen the neck and spine areas and restore range of motion.

Neck Stretching

Begin by sitting upright in a chair, reaching your arms up and clasping your hands comfortably behind your head. Bring your elbows forward in front and gently pull your head downward, with your chin coming towards your chest until you feel a good stretch in the back of the neck. Hold for 15 seconds and return to start. Repeat for 3 sets and continue exercise several times throughout the day.

Neck Exercise

Start by standing with legs together, grasping both ends of the band and step in the center of the band with one foot. Stand upright with feet together, holding your hands at about thigh height, raise your shoulders up towards your ears and back down. Repeat 25 times for a total of 3 sets.
